Why fried-to-order beats a buffet

Compared with cooking a barbecue yourself, a chip van means nobody is stuck at the grill. A chip van often compares well with a plated meal, as there’s no kitchen to hire and nothing to wash up. We’ll send you a quote.

Why Hamstead hosts choose us

  • We cover Hamstead and the whole of the Isle of Wight
  • Works on wet days as well as sunny ones
  • Mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy on the side
  • Fried fresh, not kept warm

Read our pricing and our guide to van hire costs.

Working with your venue

For big groups, the service window matters, so we can plan how to keep the queue short. Sending people up in groups helps.

Venues frequently have their own rules about outside caterers and vehicles: where a van can park, access times and the paperwork they want. Send us your venue’s requirements and we’ll confirm what we can provide.

Allergies and dietary needs

Nearly every event has some special diets. To plan for them:

  • Collect allergies with your RSVPs
  • Tell the neighbours the van is coming
  • Count children separately
  • Tell us about coeliac guests specifically

Let the neighbours know the van is coming.

Plan cover in case of showers.

Step by step

Serving is straightforward: food goes from the fryer to the hatch. Afterwards we pack up. Midsummer parties in Hamstead stay bright until about 9:20pm, while a late-September one is dark by about 7:10pm. Fairy lights by the van help once it gets dark.

  1. Send us the date, address, numbers and serving time.
  2. You get an access check and a clear price.
  3. On the day we arrive, park up and heat the fryers.
  4. We fry fresh and serve from the hatch as your guests come up.
  5. We pack up when we’re done and leave the pitch tidy.

Getting ready for the day

Before you choose a spot

No two venues are the same, so we’ll ask about yours when you contact us. Generally, we look for:

  • A level, firm spot the van can drive onto
  • Room in front of the hatch for a queue
  • Confirmation that the van can park there

Hamstead is a more remote spot, so tell us early and we will plan the journey.

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise.

Hamstead questions

Which station is closest to Hamstead?

The closest is Lymington Pier station, roughly 4.9 miles away.

What about events near the coast?

Yes. The cooking is inside the van, so wind doesn’t affect it, but the queue will want shelter.

Does the batter contain gluten?

Our battered fish contains gluten, because standard batter uses wheat flour. Tell us about coeliac guests when you enquire, and we’ll be straight with you about what’s possible.

What do you bring?

Everything is cooked in the van. Tell us about power, water and bins at the site and we will confirm what we need.

Which areas do you serve?

We take the van across London and the South East, the Isle of Wight included. See all areas.

Is there a non-fish option?

We serve sausages and pies as well as fish. Tell us about other diets and we will tell you what we can offer.

How far ahead should we book a party?

As early as you can for summer weekends. Contact us with your date.

Can you park on the road outside?

Only where it’s legal to park, or with a council parking suspension or road closure. Check with your council first.

What a fish and chip van costs

Two events with the same numbers can cost different amounts, depending on:

  • Numbers
  • How easy the site is to reach
  • Any minimum charge
  • Distance and any road charges

Got a budget? Let us know, and we will suggest how to make it work. Keeping the menu short is typically the best value.

What we need to know

For a quote, it helps to have:
