Fresh fish and chips in The Hummicks

DIY versus a fish and chip van

Doing the food yourself saves money, but the host ends up running around. With a fish and chip van, you get hot food without the work.

Ordering in from a local chip shop is an option. The problem is timing: big orders take a long time, and the food is cooling while it travels. A van cooks in front of your guests instead.

Party fish and chip van in The Hummicks, fried fresh

Everything is cooked as people come up, rather than sitting on a buffet table all afternoon. Whether it is christenings and naming days and anniversaries and engagement parties, we can cook sausage and chips, curry sauce and mushy peas.

Near The Hummicks, parties are frequently in gardens or fields. Let us know about access, and we’ll plan the route. We serve from the hatch, so it is hot and generous, and the queue keeps moving.

A chip van compared with other options

Hiring a hall and a caterer adds up. A van on the drive keeps it simple. There’s no one-size-fits-all price for a fish and chip van. A short service and a long afternoon’s trading are very different bookings. Your quote spells it all out.

The Hummicks: your questions answered

We’re gathering after a service at Church of the Blessed Virgin and Child: can you come?

Yes, at a nearby hall, home or venue with somewhere for the van. Churches rarely have space for a catering van, so the food is normally elsewhere. Tell us where you will gather.

Can the van go to venues in the New Forest National Park?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules for vehicles; ask your venue. We’ll follow the site rules.

What do you need at the house?

Let us know about power and water at the house, and we will say what we need.

How much is fish and chip van hire?

It depends on numbers, the menu, how long we serve and travel. Tell us about your party and we’ll send a quote.

Do you take everything away?

The pitch is left as we found it. Bins for guests are worth planning.

Is there a kids’ option?

Sausage and chips, generally. Let us know numbers and ages.

What if the weather’s bad?

We cook inside the van, so rain does not stop us. It’s worth planning some cover for the queue.

Can you serve children?

Yes, children are easy to cater for. Let us know numbers, and we will plan for them.

Allergies and dietary needs

Nearly every event has some special diets. To look after them:

  • Ensure the van can park legally
  • Tell the neighbours the van is coming
  • Ask about dietary needs on the invitation
  • A photo of the parking spot helps

Have bins and napkins by the van.

A few lights around the van look great.

How the day works

When we arrive, we park up on the agreed spot, set up and heat the fryers. Once we’re hot, we cook to order, so we time it to your schedule. A summer party in The Hummicks stays light until about 9:25pm at midsummer, so a garden party can run well into the evening. In late September it’s dark by about 7:10pm; add lights for the evening.

  1. Tell us what you’re planning and when you’d like to eat.
  2. We come back with availability and a clear price.
  3. The van’s spot is fixed in advance.
  4. On the day, everything is cooked to order, so nothing sits in a hot cabinet.
  5. The pitch is left tidy when we go.

How to prepare

  • Plan a bit of cover near the hatch if rain is likely
  • Let us know the serving time
  • Check the way in for low branches, cables and narrow gates
