How our party fish and chip van works in Well

A chip van also works for street parties, once the council has agreed the road closure. We are often asked to cater family parties with children and neighbourhood get-togethers, with curry sauce, cod and chips and pie and chips.

A country party near Well is perfect for fish and chips: fried fresh and eaten outside. Plan a firm spot in case it rains. We plan the timings around your day, whether that’s a first dance, a lunch break or a service time.

About the food

Curry sauce

Some people will not eat chips without curry sauce, so we bring it along.

Mushy peas

Mushy peas are made from dried marrowfat peas, soaked and cooked until soft. They’re the classic side with fish and chips.

Step by step

Your timings come first. If things run late, we hold off cooking until you are ready, so nothing is cooked before it is needed. At midsummer, it’s light in Well until about 9:25pm, so a garden party can run well into the evening. In late September it’s dark by about 7:05pm; add lights for the evening.

  1. First, tell us about your party.
  2. We check the date and where the van will park, then send a quote.
  3. We agree timings, access and the parking spot.
  4. We cook to order on the day for your guests.
  5. We serve from the hatch, then leave the pitch tidy.

How to prepare

  • Share the timings for the day
  • Ensure the van can get in
  • Confirm the van is allowed on site

Common questions in Well

Is Well too small for a chip van?

Not at all. We serve villages and hamlets as well as towns. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.

Can you serve after a service at Lord Wandsworth College Chapel?

Yes, at a nearby hall, home or venue with somewhere for the van. Churches rarely have space for a catering van, so the food is normally elsewhere. Tell us where you’ll gather.

How long are you on site?

It depends on numbers and the service time. We agree arrival, serving and finishing times with you before the day.

What’s on the menu?

Chip-shop favourites: cod or haddock and chips, sausages and pies, plus mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy. See the menu.

What does it cost to hire the van?

We quote for each booking, based on your numbers and timings. Give us your date, numbers and serving time for a clear quote.

Is everything cooked fresh?

It is. The fryers are in the van, so food is cooked there and then, rather than made in advance.

Can the van come to our street party?

Often, yes. Check your council’s rules on road closures and vehicles early.

Is grass a problem?

Frequently, if the ground is firm and dry. After heavy rain, soft grass can be a problem for any vehicle, so plan a back-up spot.

Why choose a fish and chip van in Well?

Compared with cooking a barbecue yourself, the host is not stuck cooking all afternoon. Larger groups typically cost less per head, because the van, travel and set-up cost much the same either way. Tell us your numbers for an accurate price.

Why us?

  • A menu almost everyone likes
  • We cover Well and the whole of Hampshire
  • Fried fresh, not kept warm
  • Rain doesn’t stop the fryers

Read our pricing or our guide to van hire costs.

Looking after everyone

A little planning makes sure everyone is looked after. Try these:

  • Collect allergies with your RSVPs
  • Check parking restrictions if the van is on the street
  • Mention the van to neighbours
  • Let us know if anyone has coeliac disease

We park on the agreed spot and set up, then serve as guests come up.

Put the menu up by the van.

Should I sort the food myself?

Collecting fish and chips for a crowd yourself is possible, but it’s hard work. By the time you’ve queued, paid and driven back, the batter has gone soft. With a van, it’s fried on the spot.

Weighing up a takeaway order against booking a van? Think about numbers, timing and how hot you want the food. We’re happy to send a quote so you can compare.

Prices and what affects them

Every booking is priced individually, and the price depends on a few things:

  • Your choice of menu
  • The day of the week
  • The length of service
  • Whether a minimum applies

Got a budget? Let us know, and we’ll suggest a menu and timing to match. A short menu is frequently the best value.

What we need to know

You don’t need everything decided to ask for a quote, but it helps to know:

  • Expected numbers
  • Allergies and diets you know about
  • The date and when you’d like to eat
  • A photo of the space and the way in

A detailed enquiry gets a more accurate quote: where the van would park, how to get in, numbers and timings. A picture of the spot helps too. When you are ready, use our quote form.

Planners, venues and businesses

If you are booking for a business, tell us how you’d like to handle the booking and payment, and we’ll explain how it works. We are happy to liaise with facilities on parking and timings.

For big groups, the service window matters, so we can plan how to keep the queue short. Sending people up in groups helps.
