How fish and chip van hire works in RG2
The queue at the hatch is part of the fun. People gather, catch up and get their food straight from the fryer. We serve gravy, cod and chips and sausage and chips, and typical bookings are for birthday celebrations and staff lunches and team days.
We take care of the food from arrival to the last chip, so you can get on with your event.
- Send us your date, numbers and address.
- We check the route in and send a price.
- We arrive in good time to set up.
- Fish goes into the batter and straight into the fryer, to order.
- We serve hot from the hatch and pack up when we are done.
What you will pay
Fish and chip van prices depend on the booking. A one-hour staff lunch is a different job from serving all afternoon at a fête. We set everything out in your quote.

What’s near Shinfield
Bookings here are frequently close to Church of St Mary the Virgin, Oakbank and Shinfield Infant and Nursery School and the streets around them. Other local landmarks include Bell & Bottle pub (less than half a mile south-east), Ryeish Green School (0.7 miles west) and Pearman's Copse (0.8 miles north). Shinfield’s nearest station is Reading Green Park station, roughly 2.6 miles north-west of the centre. Nearby you’ll also find Berkshire Library & Museum of Freemasonry (2.9 miles north-east) and Royal Berkshire Hospital (3.1 miles north). Open spaces near Shinfield include Longwater and Sonning Hill.
Chip van hire across RG2
RG2 covers everything from Earley, Shinfield and Arborfield Garrison to 3 small villages and hamlets, and the van works in all of them. Town bookings mean planning parking; village bookings mean planning access.
Shinfield: For anyone arriving by rail, Reading Green Park station, about 2.6 miles north-west, is the nearest station. School fairs and fundraisers, for a school such as Shinfield Infant and Nursery School, can book the van as a food stall. Late September evenings in Shinfield lose the light at about 7:05pm, and in December it’s nearer 3:55pm. After dark, a lit path to the van makes a difference.
What the van needs
We will be honest if a spot won’t work, and help find another. The main points are:
- Room in front of the hatch for a queue
- A level hardstanding, drive or firm lawn
- Access wide and high enough for the van

Takeaway run or book a van?
Ordering from a local shop? Call ahead and collect at the last minute. For a crowd, a van is normally simpler.
Frying for a crowd at home is not a good idea: big pans of hot oil, children and garden parties do not mix. Leave the frying to a van built for it.
About the food
Gravy
A pot of gravy turns chips into comfort food, especially in winter.
Haddock and chips
Haddock is a little sweeter than cod, with a finer, firmer flake. It is the traditional favourite in Scotland and much of the north.
Diets, allergies and planning
A little planning makes sure everyone is looked after. Here’s how:
- Collect allergies with your RSVPs
- Tell us how many children are coming
- Plan something for guests whose needs we can’t meet
- Let us know if anyone has coeliac disease
Fish and chips is at its best fresh from the fryer, so we cook as people come up to the hatch.
Put the menu up by the hatch so people decide while they wait.
Questions from RG2
Is there something for children?
Yes. Children usually love sausage and chips. Tell us how many are coming.
Does the batter contain gluten?
No, not as standard: batter is typically made with wheat flour. Tell us about any coeliac guests and we’ll explain the options.
How long does set-up take?
That depends on your numbers and timings. We agree arrival, serving and finishing times with you before the day.
Do you fry it on site?
Yes. We cook inside the van, so it is fried on the spot, not cooked earlier and kept warm.
Do you do anything other than fish?
Yes: sausages and pies, with chips. Give us a rough idea of numbers.
Is grass a problem?
It depends on the ground. Tell us about it when you enquire, and we’ll advise.
Is it a full meal?
It can be. A portion of fish, chips and peas is a proper meal.
