Dibden Purlieu questions

Which station is closest to Dibden Purlieu?

Southampton Town Quay station, about 2.8 miles north of the centre.

Can you serve near the sea around Dibden Purlieu?

Yes, of course. The cooking is inside the van, so wind does not affect it, but the queue will want shelter.

Can the van be part of the photos?

Often, yes, and it makes a fun photo. Add bunting or lights for the photos.

Can you serve children?

Yes. Children generally love sausage and chips. Include children in your numbers.

What if the weather’s bad?

The weather does not stop the van, because the fryers are inside. Very soft ground can be a problem, so plan a back-up spot on a hard surface.

What do you bring?

We bring the van and everything we need to cook. You provide a suitable spot and permission to park.

What areas do you cover?

London and South East England: Kent, Surrey, East and West Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire and the Isle of Wight.

What food do you serve?

Fish and chips, of course, plus sausage or pie and chips. Mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy go on the side.

Can’t we just order from the chip shop?

If you do order from a chip shop, ring well ahead and collect as close to eating time as you can. For anything more than a handful of people, a van is generally the easier option.

A DIY buffet works for small groups. For larger numbers, or when you want hot food, a van takes the pressure off, and nobody has to miss the wedding.

How it works

The van needs a level, firm spot it can drive onto, near your guests, which we agree with you beforehand. In Dibden Purlieu, midsummer sunset is about 9:25pm, and by late September it’s nearer 7:10pm, which means evening fish and chips is often served in daylight in June and July. Later in the year, plan lighting: in December it’s dark by about 4:00pm.

  1. Get in touch with the basics: when, where and roughly how many.
  2. A picture of the parking spot helps us check the van will fit.
  3. Closer to the day, we confirm the arrival time and serving time.
  4. We park, open the hatch and start frying for your guests.
  5. Once the last portion is out, we pack up and go.

How to prepare

  • Have a level parking spot ready
  • Confirm the van is allowed on site
  • Clear the route for the van

A hog roast is a classic for weddings, but it is pork only. A chip van offers fish, sausages and pies. The price depends on numbers, the menu and how long we serve, plus travel and access. We quote for each booking individually.

Why us?

  • A van that becomes part of the event
  • Rain doesn’t stop the fryers
  • Fried fresh, not kept warm
  • Hot food handed straight over

Prices and what affects them

Each booking is quoted on its own, based on a few main things:

  • Your choice of menu
  • The date and time of year
  • How long we serve
  • How easy the site is to reach

Many fish and chip vans set a minimum, since getting the van there costs the same however many eat. We will tell you up front.

The menu, dish by dish

Cod and chips

Cod and chips is the meal most people picture when they think of a chip shop. Cooked fresh at the hatch, it is hot, crisp and generous.

Sausage and chips

Sausage and chips covers anyone who doesn’t want fish, and children love it.

Looking after everyone

Dietary needs are easiest to plan with some notice. We suggest:

  • Flag coeliac guests early
  • Name a friend or coordinator as our contact
  • Count suppliers working late
  • Arrange an alternative for anyone who can’t eat from the van

After service, we pack up quietly and let the dancing carry on.

Let the DJ or band announce when the food is ready.

Hosting at home? Send us a photo of the drive or the spot and the way in, and we’ll let you know if the van will fit.
