Wedding fish and chip van in Hassocks, cooked to order

Evening wedding food from a fish and chip van is a favourite. Hours after the wedding breakfast, guests are ready to eat again, and fish and chips from the hatch is exactly what they want. Popular choices include cod and chips, haddock and chips and mushy peas, and typical bookings are for barn and farm weddings and seaside-themed weddings.

A farm or garden wedding near Hassocks suits a chip van. We need a firm spot and access. Every portion is cooked to order on the day, never cooked in advance and left in a hot cabinet, and handed over as soon as it’s ready.

Space, access and the venue

If a spot isn’t suitable, we will tell you, and help find another. What matters most:

  • Room in front of the hatch for a queue
  • Light near the van and the queue for evening service
  • A level, firm spot the van can drive onto

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we will advise.

Diets, allergies and planning

Tell us about dietary needs and allergies early, and we will be straight with you about what’s possible. To make it work smoothly:

  • Have a back-up for guests with special diets
  • Name a friend or coordinator as our contact
  • Tell us about coeliac guests specifically
  • Ask about dietary needs on the invitation

Once everyone has eaten, we pack up and let the dancing carry on.

Think about cover by the hatch for wet evenings.

Working with your venue

Venues frequently have their own rules about outside caterers and vehicles: parking spots, arrival times and documents. Tell us what your venue needs and we’ll work through them with you.

Why fried-to-order beats a buffet

For evening food with a bit of fun, a fish and chip van is a great choice. Dates make a difference: summer Saturdays and December Fridays are the busiest days of the year. Ask about your date early.

Why book our van in Hassocks

  • A van that becomes part of the event
  • No kitchen needed
  • A clear quote before booking
  • Fish and chips fried fresh on site

Should I sort the food myself?

A DIY buffet works for small groups. For bigger numbers, a van makes life easier, and nobody has to miss the wedding.

Ordering in from a local chip shop is an option. Large orders are slow, and the food cools in the bags. A van solves that by cooking on site.

Questions from Hassocks

Can the van go to venues in the South Downs National Park?

Yes. Some venues there have rules about vehicles and ground, so check with yours. We will follow the site rules.

We are gathering after a service at St Francis of Assisi: can you come?

Yes, at a nearby hall, home or venue with somewhere for the van. Food is usually served at the reception venue rather than the church. Tell us where you will gather.

What food do you serve?

The classics: cod, haddock, chips, sausages and pies, with mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy. See the menu.

How far ahead should we book?

Early, particularly for summer Saturdays and Christmas party Fridays. Even at short notice, it’s worth asking.

What does the van need?

Not much: a drive, a car park, a yard or a firm lawn, with a clear way in. If in doubt, send a picture.

Is the food cooked at the event?

Yes. We fry to order in the van at your venue, and serve straight from the hatch.

How many portions do we need?

That depends on your day. Many couples cater for most of the evening list, not all.

Can you do our evening wedding food?

Of course. Evening food is the most common wedding booking for a fish and chip van. Send us your date and venue.

The process

Nothing is cooked before it’s needed. Fish is battered and fried when people come up to the hatch, which is why it tastes like it does at the seaside. In Hassocks, evening wedding food frequently coincides with dusk: about 9:20pm at midsummer, 8:50pm in late May and 7:05pm in late September. A few lights by the hatch help guests and photos alike.

  1. Start with three things: the date, the place and a rough headcount.
  2. Show us where the van would go, and we’ll confirm it works.
  3. Closer to the day, we confirm the arrival time and serving time.
  4. The van rolls up, the hatch opens and the fryers get going for your guests.
  5. Once the last portion is out, we pack up and go.

How to prepare

  • Confirm numbers and dietary needs before the day
  • Ensure the van can get in
  • Plan where the queue will stand
