Events we cater in Hoyle

Rain doesn’t stop the fryers, which takes one worry off the list.

Here are some of the occasions we serve:

  • Relaxed, informal receptions
  • Weddings in a marquee or garden
  • Coastal-themed receptions
  • Evening food for day and evening guests

Marrying at The Parish Church of St James? A reception at a garden, barn or hall close by gives the van somewhere to park for the evening.

Choosing a fish and chip van

How the day works

Service is quick: food goes from the fryer to the hatch, and people can eat where they like. Afterwards we pack up. Winter weddings in Hoyle are dark by about 4:00pm, so the route from the reception to the van needs lighting, while a June wedding has light until about 9:20pm.

  1. First, the plan: what, where and what time.
  2. We come back with availability and a clear price.
  3. We agree exactly where the van parks.
  4. Batter, fish and chips all go into the fryer as people come up.
  5. The pitch is left tidy when we go.

Preparing for the day

  • Tell us when you want to eat
  • Have a level parking spot ready
  • Confirm numbers and dietary needs before the day

What a fish and chip van costs

Every booking is priced individually, and the price depends on a few things:

  • How long we serve
  • Your choice of menu
  • The date and time of year
  • How easy the site is to reach

Dates make a difference: summer Saturdays and December Fridays are the busiest days of the year. Ask about your date early.

What to tell us

We can quote more accurately with a few details. Here’s what to include:

  • Access details such as gates and narrow lanes
  • The address or venue name
  • Dietary needs, with numbers
  • Roughly how many people, including children

We quote for each event separately, so the price fits what you actually need. For a quote, send us your details through our quote form.

What the van needs

We will agree the van’s spot with you before the day. It needs to tick a few simple boxes:

  • Lighting nearby for evening events
  • A level hardstanding, drive or firm lawn
  • Room in front of the hatch for a queue

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise before you book.

What we serve

  • Sausage and chips
  • Curry sauce
  • Mushy peas
  • Evening fish and chips
  • Cod and chips
  • Haddock and chips

For planners, venues and organisers

For big groups, the service window matters, so we can plan how to keep the queue short. Sending people up in groups helps.

Venues frequently have their own rules about outside caterers and vehicles: where a van can park, access times and the paperwork they want. Send us your venue’s requirements and we will work through them with you.

Hoyle: your questions answered

Do you come to venues in the South Downs National Park?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules for vehicles; ask your venue. We’ll work to whatever the site needs.

Can you serve after a service at The Parish Church of St James?

Yes, at a home, hall or venue nearby where the van can park. Food is normally served at the reception venue rather than the church. Send us the address.

Do you need power or water?

Somewhere suitable to park, with permission. Mention any power or water available and we’ll confirm the rest.

Can you park on the road outside?

That depends on local parking rules. A drive, car park or yard is normally easier; if it has to be the street, check with the council.

Where do you take the van?

London and the South East: Kent, Surrey, East and West Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire and the Isle of Wight.

Do you fry it on site?

Yes. We fry to order in the van at your venue, then handed over hot from the hatch.

Can the van park on grass?

Often, if the ground is firm and dry. After heavy rain, soft grass can be a problem for any vehicle, so plan a back-up spot.

Can you cook in the rain?

We cook inside the van, so rain does not stop us. Guests will appreciate cover near the hatch.

What comes out of the fryer

Haddock and chips

Haddock is a little sweeter than cod, with a finer, firmer flake. It is the traditional favourite in Scotland and much of the north.

Mushy peas

No fish and chips is complete without mushy peas for many people.

Allergies and dietary needs

We need to know about dietary needs and allergies in advance, and we will be straight with you about what’s possible. To make it work smoothly:

  • Name a friend or coordinator as our contact
  • Add an allergy question to your RSVP card
  • Put bins near the van
  • Have a back-up for guests with special diets

Evening food generally goes out between about 8pm and 9:30pm, once the first dance is done.

Festoon lights by the van look lovely in the evening photos.

DIY versus a fish and chip van

Ordering in from a local chip shop is an option. The problem is timing: big orders take a long time, and the food is cooling while it travels. A van solves that by cooking on site.

Collecting fish and chips for a crowd yourself is possible, but it is hard work. Long waits and a drive home mean food arrives lukewarm and soggy. A van fries it right there, so it’s crisp.

  • Fried fresh to order in the van at your event
  • Cod, haddock and chips, sausages and pies
  • The van comes to you: homes, venues, workplaces and fields
  • Served at the time you choose, from the hatch
