Service is timed to your lunch break or shift pattern, so each group can eat within its break. We are often asked to cater shift teams at depots and warehouses and summer staff parties, serving pie and chips, mushy peas and haddock and chips.

Didling for staff days and team lunches

Didling is about 6 miles south-east of Petersfield, in West Sussex. People in Didling book us for all sorts of reasons, but it always starts the same way: a level spot for the van, a time to eat and food fried to order. Didling is one of 371 places in West Sussex where we bring the van. You can also see our page for Guildford, about 22 miles away.

Within reach of Didling are historic houses such as Uppark (3.7 miles west) and Cowdray House (3.8 miles north-east). Estates and historic houses can make memorable settings for client events, but they generally set strict rules for vehicles. With the South Downs National Park within about 4 miles, rural team days are easy to arrange.

For staff events in GU29, we just need to know where the van can park. Nearby, we also serve staff events in Ingrams Green (1 mile north), Elsted Marsh (1 mile north), Elsted (1 mile north-west), Dumpford (2 miles north) and Trotton (2 miles north). Further out, we also take the van to Bognor Regis (13 miles south-east), Chichester (8 miles south), Emsworth (9 miles south-west), Portfield (9 miles south), Yapton (13 miles south-east) and East Wittering (14 miles south).

A little further out are Midhurst Museum (3.5 miles north-east) and Midhurst Community Hospital (3.9 miles north-east). Within reach you’ll find Iping and Stedham Commons and Levin Down.

Can’t we just order from the chip shop?

For a small group, making your own food can work. For bigger numbers, a van makes life easier, and you get to enjoy the day.

You could do a chip-shop run for everyone yourself, but it rarely works for a crowd. Long waits and a drive home mean food arrives lukewarm and soggy. A van fries it right there, so it is crisp.

The menu, dish by dish

Sausage and chips

Sausage and chips covers anyone who doesn’t want fish, and children love it.

Gravy

In the north and the Midlands, gravy is the side of choice, and it goes perfectly with a pie.

Didling: your questions answered

How far is Didling from London?

Roughly 48 miles from the centre of London, and well within our area.

Do you come out to small places like Didling?

Not at all. We serve villages and hamlets as well as towns. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.

What about staff who do not eat fish?

Sausage and chips and pie and chips are on the menu. Tell us about other diets and we will be honest about what’s possible.

Do we need to provide equipment?

The van comes fully equipped to cook. You provide a suitable spot and permission to park.

Do we need to provide anything?

Let us know about power and water at the site when you enquire, and we’ll confirm what we need.

How does payment work for businesses?

We’ll explain how it works when we quote.

What’s on the menu?

The classics: cod, haddock, chips, sausages and pies, plus mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy. See the menu.

What if the weather’s bad?

We cook inside the van, so rain does not stop us. It is worth planning some cover for the queue.

Planning for dietary needs

With a bit of planning, dietary needs are easier to handle. Here are a few tips:

  • Send allergies to us in writing
  • Ask facilities about access
  • Ask facilities what paperwork they need
  • Flag any coeliac staff

For shift teams, we serve in waves, as agreed in advance.

A simple pre-order helps us plan.

Is a fish and chip van right for your staff event?

With a barbecue, somebody ends up at the grill. With a van, nobody from the team has to cook. Compared with a sit-down meal, a fish and chip van is frequently good value, because it needs no kitchen and no crockery hire. We will send you a quote.

Why us?

  • The queue at the hatch gets people talking
  • A menu almost everyone likes
  • We cook inside the van, whatever the weather
  • The classic sides: peas, curry sauce and gravy

The process

Your timings come first. If the day runs behind, we hold off cooking until you’re ready, so nothing is cooked before it is needed. Lunchtime bookings in Didling are in daylight all year; winter evening events are dark by about 4:00pm, so evening events need a lit spot. A summer after-work event has daylight until about 9:20pm.

  1. Contact us with the basics: when, where and roughly how many.
  2. Show us where the van would go, and we’ll confirm it works.
  3. A week or so before, we confirm timings and numbers.
  4. We park, open the hatch and start frying for your staff.
  5. Once the last portion is out, we pack up and go.

How to prepare

  • Let us know the serving time
  • Make sure the van can get in
  • Leave room in front of the hatch for a queue

Planning help

For planners, venues and organisers

For big groups, the service window matters, so we can plan how to keep the queue short. Sending people up in groups helps.

Parks, greens and streets typically need permission for a catering van. The council or landowner will tell you what they need.

How we price a fish and chip van for your team

There are no hidden charges: the quote reflects:

  • Travel, tolls and road charges
  • The number of meals
  • Parking and the way in
  • The menu and how many choices

Larger groups normally cost less per head, because the van, travel and set-up cost much the same either way. Give us your numbers and we will quote.

Getting an accurate quote

Here’s what makes a quick, accurate quote possible:

  • A picture of the space and the way in
  • Roughly how many people, including children
  • The date and when you’d like to eat
  • Allergies and diets you know about

Every booking is quoted individually, so the price fits what you actually need. For a quote, use our quote form.

  • Fried fresh to order in the van at your event
  • Cod, haddock and chips, sausages and pies
  • The van comes to you: homes, venues, workplaces and fields
  • Served at the time you choose, from the hatch
