Fresh fish and chips in Five Wents

About our film set catering in Five Wents

A chip van is a popular crew treat on a long shoot, alongside regular catering. On the menu are mushy peas, sausage and chips and haddock and chips, and we are regularly asked to cater location shoots and crew treats on long shoot days.

Near Five Wents, check tracks and ground for the van. We cook inside the van, right where your crew are, and the food reaches them hot and crisp.

Step by step

There’s very little for you to do on the day: show us the spot, tell us when to start, and enjoy your shoot. The frying and serving are down to us. Winter shoots near Five Wents chase the light, which goes at about 3:50pm in December, so lunch at base is often in daylight but a wrap meal isn’t.

  1. Get in touch with the basics: when, where and roughly how many.
  2. Show us where the van would go, and we’ll confirm it works.
  3. Closer to the day, we confirm the arrival time and serving time.
  4. We park, open the hatch and start frying for the crew.
  5. Once the last portion is out, we pack up and go.

How to prepare

  • Confirm the van is allowed on site
  • Let us know who to talk to on the day
  • Confirm numbers and dietary needs before the day

Questions from Five Wents

Can the van go to venues in the Kent Downs National Landscape?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules for vehicles; ask your venue. We’ll follow the site rules.

How far is Five Wents from London?

Roughly 35 miles from the centre of London.

How quickly can you serve everyone?

Keeping choices simple and sending people up in groups helps. Tell us your timings and we’ll advise.

Can you park on the road outside?

Only in a legal space, or with the council’s permission. Ask your council early.

Do you clear up afterwards?

We take the van and everything with it, and leave the spot tidy. It helps to have bins near the hatch.

Can you serve children?

Children are very welcome. Tell us how many children, and we’ll include them in the plan.

Is the fish gluten-free?

Our battered fish contains gluten, because standard batter uses wheat flour. Let us know about coeliac crew in advance, and we’ll tell you honestly what we can offer.

Is there a non-fish option?

Yes: sausage and chips or pie and chips. Give us a rough idea of numbers.

Planning for dietary needs

We need to know about dietary needs and allergies in advance, and we will tell you honestly what we can offer. To get it right:

  • Ensure we can reach locations on the day
  • Send final numbers the day before
  • Put allergy details in writing
  • Share the base location and route

A short menu keeps the line moving in a lunch break.

Bins at base keep the location clean.

Gravy

Chips and gravy is a favourite in the north and the Midlands, and it goes perfectly with a pie.

Pie and chips

Pie and chips is hearty and filling, and it is especially welcome on a cold day.

Organising for someone else?

If you run the same event each year, tell us your dates early, so we can hold the date.

Many venues set rules for catering vans: parking spots, arrival times and documents. Tell us what your venue needs and we’ll work through them with you.

Before you choose a spot

A good parking spot makes the whole thing easier. We need:

  • A route in the van can manage, with no low branches or tight lanes
  • Light near the van if needed
  • Away from the shooting area’s sound

Not sure about the spot? Send us a picture and we’ll tell you honestly.

What we serve

  • Mushy peas
  • Cod and chips
  • Haddock and chips
  • Crew lunches
  • Pie and chips
  • Sausage and chips

What affects the price in Five Wents

There are no hidden charges: the price is based on:

  • The length of service
  • How easy the site is to reach
  • The minimum booking
  • The date and time of year

The price depends on numbers, the menu and how long we serve, along with distance and access to the site. Every booking gets its own quote.

Getting an accurate quote

To speed things up, tell us:

  • Rough numbers for adults and children
  • Anything awkward about the way in
  • Where the van would park
  • The date and time of the event

Takeaway run or book a van?

Ordering in from a local chip shop is an option. Large orders are slow, and the food cools in the bags. A van solves that by cooking on site.

A DIY buffet works for small groups. For larger numbers, or when you want hot food, a van takes the pressure off, and nobody has to miss the shoot.

A fish and chip van or other catering?

Some locations have nowhere to buy food. The van solves that. Distance and any road charges make a difference, so tell us exactly where your shoot is.
