Film set catering in Hollywater

Hollywater for film and TV crews

Hollywater is about 6 miles south-east of Alton, in Hampshire. Bookings in Hollywater come in all shapes and sizes, but it always starts the same way: somewhere to park, a time to serve and fresh frying. We serve all 683 towns and villages in Hampshire. Our nearest city page is Guildford, about 16 miles away.

Crew coming by rail can use the station: the nearest station is Liphook station, about 3.1 miles south-east. The Surrey Hills National Landscape is within about 6 miles of Hollywater, so check vehicle rules with locations.

For shoots in GU35, we just need to know where the van can park and roughly how many crew. Your shoot could be at a house on Hollywater Road and Liphook Road or the roads around them, wherever the van can park. We also bring the van to shoots in Standford (1 mile north-east), Whitehill (1 mile west), Deadwater (1 mile north), Bordon (1 mile north-west) and Lindford (1 mile north). Further out, we also take the van to Farnborough (14 miles north), Fleet (12 miles north), Horndean (15 miles south-west), Aldershot (11 miles north), Alton (6 miles north-west) and Petersfield (8 miles south-west).

A little further out are The Romany Museum (3.9 miles west) and Chase Community Hospital (0.6 miles north-west). Open spaces near Hollywater include Wheeler's Down and Deadwater Valley.

  • Schools near Hollywater include Mill Chase Academy (0.8 miles north)

Schedules move, so give us a contact on the day and we will work around it. For wrap celebrations and outside broadcasts, we can cook mushy peas, haddock and chips and cod and chips for your guests.

Near Hollywater, check tracks and ground for the van with locations. We cook inside the van, right where your crew are, so the batter is still crisp when it’s handed over.

Choosing a fish and chip van

Diets, allergies and planning

Good planning keeps every guest safe and happy. Here’s how:

  • Have a back-up for special diets
  • Give us a map or what3words for base
  • Give us a contact for call-time changes
  • Send allergies to us in writing

Tell us if supporting artists are eating.

Bins at base keep the location clean.

DIY versus a fish and chip van

Ordering in from a local chip shop is an option. The problem is timing: big orders take a long time, and the food is cooling while it travels. A van solves that by cooking on site.

Collecting fish and chips for a crowd yourself is possible, but it is hard work. Long waits and a drive home mean food arrives lukewarm and soggy. A van fries it right there, so it’s crisp.

Working with your venue

For repeat bookings, such as regular staff lunches or annual fairs, let us know your dates early, so we can hold the date.

For big groups, the service window matters, so we can plan how to keep the queue short. Sending people up in groups helps.

Hollywater questions

Is Hollywater too small for a chip van?

Not at all. We serve villages and hamlets as well as towns. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.

Can the van go to venues in the Surrey Hills National Landscape?

Yes. Some venues there have rules about vehicles and ground, so check with yours. We will follow the site rules.

What about crew who don’t eat fish?

Sausage and chips and pie and chips are on the menu. Tell us about other diets and we’ll tell you what we can offer.

Can you park on the road outside?

Only in a legal space, or with the council’s permission. Ask your council early.

Do you cover Hollywater?

Yes. We cover London and the South East, and Hollywater is within our area and the rest of Hampshire. For a quote, use our quote form.

Do you do wrap parties?

Yes. It is a great way to end a shoot.

Do you take everything away?

The pitch is left as we found it. Bins for crew are worth planning.

What areas do you cover?

London and South East England: Kent, Surrey, East and West Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire and the Isle of Wight.

What the van needs

We will be honest if a spot will not work, and suggest an alternative. The main points are:

  • A level, firm spot at the unit base
  • Away from the shooting area’s sound
  • Space in front of the hatch

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we will advise.

From the hatch

  • Mushy peas
  • Cod and chips
  • Crew lunches
  • Sausage and chips
  • Haddock and chips
  • Pie and chips

The process

Expect a friendly, organised set-up. Arrival and serving times are agreed beforehand, set up where we have agreed, and cook and serve without fuss. Daylight is short on winter shoots near Hollywater: sunset is about 4:00pm, so lunch at base is frequently in daylight but a wrap meal is not.

  1. Tell us what you’re planning and when you’d like to eat.
  2. You hear back on the date and the price.
  3. The van’s spot is fixed in advance.
  4. On the day, everything is cooked to order, so nothing sits in a hot cabinet.
  5. We leave the spot as we found it.

Getting ready for the day

  • Make sure the van can get in
  • Think about a gazebo by the van in case of rain
  • Confirm numbers and dietary needs before the day

Why fried-to-order beats a buffet

Some locations have nowhere to buy food. The van solves that. The cost per head normally falls as numbers rise, since the van and set-up are much the same for any size. Tell us your numbers for an accurate price.

What you get with us

  • No surprises in your quote
  • Cod, haddock, sausages and pies
  • Hot food handed straight over
  • Something for crew to gather round

The menu, dish by dish

Curry sauce

Chip-shop curry sauce is a mild, slightly sweet British classic, great with chips and sausages.

Mushy peas

Proper mushy peas start with dried marrowfat peas. They’re the side most people expect.

  • Fried fresh to order in the van at your event
  • Cod, haddock and chips, sausages and pies
  • The van comes to you: homes, venues, workplaces and fields
  • Served at the time you choose, from the hatch
