Film set catering in Monkhams

About our film set catering in Monkhams

A chip van fits right in at seaside locations. For seaside shoots and crew lunches at base, we’ll put together a menu of sausage and chips, mushy peas and pie and chips.

Shoots in Monkhams frequently use streets, yards and car parks as unit bases. The location manager will arrange the van’s spot, often with council permission. Food is served straight from the hatch, so every portion is hot, and service is quick once we are up and running.

Step by step

Rain doesn’t stop the fryers, because the cooking happens inside the van. Crew will still appreciate a bit of cover near the hatch. Winter shoots near Monkhams chase the light, which goes at about 3:50pm in December, so lunch at base is frequently in daylight but a wrap meal isn’t.

  1. The production office sends us the location, dates, numbers and lunch time.
  2. We check the route and the unit base and send a price.
  3. We agree the van’s position and arrival with the location manager.
  4. We set up at the unit base and fry to order for the lunch break.
  5. We pack up straight after service and leave the base tidy.

How to prepare

  • Think about a gazebo by the van in case of rain
  • Check the venue or landowner is happy for the van to park
  • Name one person we can call on the day

Planning help

Why fried-to-order beats a buffet

A full location catering unit suits long shoots with three meals a day. A van is great for short jobs and crew treats. Most vans have a minimum charge, since getting the van there costs the same however many eat. We will tell you up front.

Why book our van in Monkhams

  • No surprises in your quote
  • All the chip-shop extras
  • Events in Monkhams and across Greater London
  • Works on wet days as well as sunny ones

Take a look at our prices page and what a fish and chip van costs.

Prices and what affects them

We will give you a clear quote. What affects it most:

  • Access and parking
  • Service time
  • Whether a minimum applies
  • The number of meals

Larger groups generally cost less per head, since the van and set-up are much the same for any size. Give us your numbers and we will quote.

Getting an accurate quote

You don’t need every detail fixed to get a quote, but these help:

  • Access details such as gates and narrow lanes
  • The date and when you’d like to eat
  • Where the van would park
  • A picture of the parking spot

Every booking is quoted individually, so the price fits what you actually need. For a quote, send us your details through our quote form.

Should I sort the food myself?

Some hosts try a takeaway order. Large orders are slow, and the food cools in the bags. A van solves that by cooking on site.

Not sure whether to order in or book a van? Consider your numbers and how fresh you want it. Ask us for a quote and compare.

Organising for someone else?

Many venues set rules for catering vans: parking spots, arrival times and documents. Tell us what your venue needs and we’ll work through them with you.

Booking for a company? Tell us what your finance team needs, and we’ll explain how it works. We are happy to liaise with facilities on parking and timings.

Monkhams questions

What about parking in Monkhams?

It can be, so tell us about driveways, yards, car parks or a council suspension. We will work around it.

Which station is closest to Monkhams?

Highams Park station, about 1.2 miles south-west of the centre.

Do you have documents for productions?

Productions vary, so ask your production office for the list and we will go through it.

What do you bring?

Everything is cooked in the van. Tell us about power, water and bins at the site and we’ll confirm what we need.

Do you clear up afterwards?

The pitch is left as we found it. Bins for crew are worth planning.

What if we only have street parking?

It depends on the road. Off-road parking is usually simpler; for the street, check the council’s rules.

What’s on the menu?

Proper fish and chips, plus sausage or pie and chips. The sides are mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy.

Can you cook in the rain?

We carry on in the rain, because the fryers are inside. Very soft ground can be a problem, so plan a back-up spot on a hard surface.

Diets, allergies and planning

Most events have a few crew with dietary needs. To look after them:

  • Flag any coeliac crew
  • Confirm allergies by email
  • Collect diets and allergies with crew details
  • Send final numbers the day before

Tell us if supporting artists are eating.

A chip van wrap party is a great way to finish a shoot.

Space, access and the venue

A good parking spot makes the whole thing easier. We need:

  • A queue area clear of trucks
  • A level, firm spot at the unit base
  • A lit spot for dark mornings or evenings

As a London location, Monkhams is inside the Ultra Low Emission Zone, and parking takes planning: let us know about off-street space or permits.

Not sure about the spot? Send us a photo and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.
