Questions from Rownhams

Is Rownhams close to London?

About 70 miles from central London, and we cover it as standard.

Can the van go to venues in the New Forest National Park?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules for vehicles; ask your venue. We will follow the site rules.

Is grass a problem?

Generally, if it’s firm and dry. Soft, wet ground can trap any vehicle, so plan a back-up spot.

What can crew choose from?

Proper fish and chips, plus sausage or pie and chips. The sides are mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy.

Do you take everything away?

We clear the van’s area after service. Tell us where bins can go for people’s paper and trays.

Is everything cooked fresh?

It is. The fryers are in the van, so food is cooked there and then, rather than made in advance.

Is there a non-fish option?

There is: sausage and chips or pie and chips. Give us a rough idea of numbers.

What if lunch moves?

We expect changes. A contact on the day is all we need.

How it works

A typical booking goes like this: we arrive, park up and set up, the oil comes up to temperature, and food goes out hot when you’re ready to eat. In December, daylight in Rownhams ends around 4:00pm, so the unit base needs lighting for late service. Summer shoots have daylight until about 9:25pm.

  1. The production office sends us the location, dates, numbers and lunch time.
  2. We check access and send a quote.
  3. Parking and arrival are agreed with locations.
  4. We set up at the unit base and fry to order for the lunch break.
  5. We clear up and get out of the way.

Before we arrive

Planning for dietary needs

With a little notice, diets are easier to plan for. We suggest:

  • Have a back-up for special diets
  • Flag any coeliac crew
  • Update numbers if they change
  • Add an allergy question to crew forms

Shooting in Rownhams: unit bases and access

Rownhams is about 3 miles north-east of Totton, in Southampton. Shoots in Rownhams are planned around your venue and timings: a quote, a parking spot and fresh frying on the day. Rownhams is one of 40 towns and villages in Southampton we cover.

Within reach of Rownhams are historic houses such as South Stoneham House (3.5 miles east) and Southampton Tudor House and Garden (4 miles south-east). Historic houses are popular locations, and most set strict rules for vehicles, so plan the unit base with locations. Central London is about 70 miles from Rownhams, within easy reach for London-based crews. Rownhams is within about 8 miles of the New Forest National Park, and locations in protected landscapes frequently have rules about vehicles. The coast is within about 5 miles of Rownhams, and coastal unit bases can be exposed, so plan where crew will queue.

Shoots anywhere in SO16 start with a parking spot for the van and roughly how many crew. That could mean a shoot at a home on Rownhams Way, Horns Drove and Rownhams Close or the roads around them, wherever the van can park. Other places close to Rownhams we cover include Upton (1 mile west), Nursling (1 mile south-west), Hillyfields (1 mile south-west), Lordswood (1 mile south-east) and Toothill (1 mile north-west). Why fried-to-order beats a buffet

Compared with sandwiches on set, a chip van gives the crew a proper hot meal. Compared with a sit-down meal, a fish and chip van is frequently good value, because it needs no kitchen and no crockery hire. We will send you a quote.

Why us?

  • No kitchen needed
  • Everything cooked to order at your event
  • Quick service from the hatch
  • Classic food your crew already know

For event organisers in Rownhams

For larger numbers, tell us how long you have for food, so we can plan how to keep the queue short. Sending people up in groups helps.

Parks, greens and streets normally need permission for a catering van. Ask the council or landowner early.

Food your guests will love

Gravy

Gravy brings a bit of warmth to the meal, especially in winter.

Mushy peas

No fish and chips is complete without mushy peas for many people, and they’re on the menu.

Takeaway run or book a van?

A DIY buffet works for small groups. For larger numbers, or when you want hot food, a van takes the pressure off, and you get to enjoy the day.

Doing the food yourself saves money, but the host ends up running around. With a fish and chip van, you get hot food without the work.

What affects the price in Rownhams

There are no hidden charges: the price is based on:

  • Cod, haddock or both
  • How far we travel
  • The number of meals
  • Service time

The cost per head usually falls as numbers rise, since the van and set-up are much the same for any size. Give us your numbers and we’ll quote.

Getting an accurate quote

For a quote, it helps to have:

  • The date and time of the event
  • Where the event is
  • Access details such as gates and narrow lanes
  • Any dietary needs and allergies

To get a price, use our quote form. Give us the details of your shoot, and we’ll come back with availability and a quote.

What the van needs

Most drives, car parks, yards and firm lawns can take the van, but there are a few things to check:

  • Lighting for early or late service
  • Space in front of the hatch
  • Level, firm ground at base

If you’re unsure, send a photo of the space and the way in, and we will say what we think.

From the hatch

  • Cod and chips
  • Haddock and chips
  • Mushy peas
  • Sausage and chips
  • Crew lunches
  • Pie and chips
