About the food

Cod and chips

For many people, cod and chips is the definitive version. Fried to order in the van, it’s hot, crisp and generous.

Pie and chips

For a heartier option, there’s pie and chips.

Prices and what affects them

These are the factors that matter most:

  • Whether a minimum applies
  • How many people are eating
  • Distance and any road charges
  • Access and parking

Many fish and chip vans set a minimum, since getting the van there costs the same however many eat. Ask us what applies to your event.

Getting an accurate quote

Good planning starts with a few facts. Try to include:

  • A photo of the parking spot
  • The address or venue name
  • Any dietary needs and allergies
  • Roughly how many people, including children

How it works

We arrive in good time before you want to eat, park the van and get the fryers going. Your visitors can wander over to the hatch as soon as we open. Summer fêtes in Ovingdean have long light evenings, with sunset about 9:15pm at midsummer, but by late September the light goes at about 7:05pm, so evening trading may need lights.

  1. Organisers send us the event, the dates and the pitch details.
  2. We confirm availability, our pitch needs and anything the event asks for.
  3. On the day, we arrive and set up our pitch.
  4. We trade from the hatch all event, frying to order.
  5. We pack down at the end and leave the pitch clean.

Before we arrive

  • Confirm the van is allowed on site
  • Name one person we can call on the day
  • Plan where the queue will stand

Why fried-to-order beats a buffet

Compared with a barbecue run by volunteers, a chip van frees your helpers. Larger groups usually cost less per head, since the van and set-up are much the same for any size. Tell us your numbers for an accurate price.

Planners, venues and businesses

If you’re booking for a business, tell us how you’d like to handle the booking and payment, and we’ll talk you through the process. We can work with your facilities team on access and timings.

If your event is in a public place, such as a park or a street, check what permission you need first. Ask the council or landowner early.

Cannot we just order from the chip shop?

DIY food keeps costs down, but the host spends the event serving. Booking the van means hot food and no stress.

Not sure whether to order in or book a van? Consider your numbers and how fresh you want it. We are happy to send a quote so you can compare.
