Takeaway run or book a van?

Weighing up a takeaway order against booking a van? Consider your numbers and how fresh you want it. Ask us for a quote and compare.

A DIY buffet works for small groups. For bigger numbers, a van makes life easier, and nobody has to miss the event.

Preston events: pitches and permissions

Preston is about 1 mile north-west of Brighton, in Brighton and Hove. In and around Preston, the van can serve from a drive, a yard, a car park or a firm field. We take the van to all 30 towns and villages in Brighton and Hove.

If your event is in Preston Park, the organiser will need the landowner’s permission for vehicles and traders. A school like St Bernadette's Catholic Primary School can book the van for a fair, fun run or sports day. Events in and around the South Downs National Park, within about 6 miles of Preston, frequently have rules about vehicles, ground and waste; we will follow the site’s requirements. With the sea within about 2 miles, we plan shelter from the wind for coastal events.

We take the van to events all over the BN1, BN3 and BN88 postcode area and the streets around it. Your event could be at a house on Home Road, Bates Road and Loder Road, as long as there is somewhere for the van. Being close to the A23, Preston is simple for us to get to for your event. Close by, we cover events in Withdean (1 mile north), Prestonville (1 mile south), Hollingdean (1 mile east), Seven Dials (1 mile south) and West Hill (1 mile south). Within a short drive, we also cover Saltdean (6 miles south-east), East Saltdean (6 miles south-east), Roedean (3 miles south-east), Rottingdean (4 miles south-east) and Ovingdean (4 miles south-east).

A little further out are Churchill Square (1.5 miles south) and Brighton Transport Museum (0.5 miles south). Within reach you will find Newmarket Hill and Ladies Mile.

  • Schools near Preston include Dorothy Stringer High School (less than half a mile north-east) and Varndean College (0.5 miles north-east)

Planners, venues and businesses

Planning an event for a club, school or charity in Preston? A fish and chip van draws people in and almost everyone likes it. Tell us about the event and we will take it from there.

If you’re planning an event on someone’s behalf, such as a wedding planner, an office manager or a fête committee, we’ll work directly with you and the venue. It keeps things simple.

Space, access and the venue

A good parking spot makes the whole thing easier. We need:

  • A hard-standing or firm grass pitch
  • Space for a queue away from paths
  • The landowner’s or organiser’s permission for the van

If you’re unsure, send a photo of the space and the way in, and we’ll say what we think before booking.

Common questions in Preston

Do you trade at school fairs around Preston?

Yes, with the school’s permission. Tell us the date and pitch details.

Which station is closest to Preston?

Preston has its own station: Preston Park station.

Do you clear up afterwards?

We clear the van’s area after service. Let us know about bins for visitors.

What areas do you cover?

London and the South East: Kent, Surrey, East and West Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire and the Isle of Wight.

How much is fish and chip van hire?

It depends on numbers, the menu, how long we serve and travel. Tell us about your event and we’ll send a quote.

Is grass a problem?

Usually, if it’s firm and dry. Soft, wet ground can trap any vehicle, so plan a back-up spot.

When do you arrive?

That depends on your numbers and timings. We confirm all the timings beforehand.

What do you need on the pitch?

Send us the pitch details, and we’ll check it works.

A fish and chip van or other catering?

One good hot-food van can be enough at a smaller event, with cakes and teas alongside. Dates make a difference: peak summer weekends and Christmas party Fridays book up first. Ask about your date early.

Why book with us

  • Works on wet days as well as sunny ones
  • Mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy on the side
  • No surprises in your quote
  • Fried fresh, not kept warm

How the day works

Setting up takes a little while, because the oil has to come up to temperature, so we are there in good time before you want to eat. For an evening event in Preston, sunset is about 8:50pm in late May and 9:20pm in late June; after that, the pitch needs good lighting.

  1. Organisers send us the event, the dates and the pitch details.
  2. We confirm availability, our pitch needs and anything the event asks for.
  3. On the day, we arrive and set up our pitch.
  4. We fry to order and serve from the hatch through the event.
  5. We clear the pitch when the event closes.

How to prepare

  • Tell us when you want to eat
  • Send us final numbers and any allergies in good time
  • Plan where the queue will stand

How to get a price

Send us the date, the address or BN1 postcode and rough numbers, plus when you’d like to eat, and we’ll reply with a quote. To get started, fill in our quote form.
