We keep it calm and simple. We park discreetly and serve when people are ready. Whether it’s village hall wakes and gatherings at home after a funeral, we can cook pie and chips, mushy peas and haddock and chips and more.

For event organisers in The City

If you’re booking for a business, tell us how you’d like to handle the booking and payment, and we will talk you through the process. We can work with your facilities team on access and timings.

Parks, greens and streets typically need permission for a catering van. The council or landowner will tell you what they need.

Why choose a fish and chip van in The City?

Many wakes have sandwiches and cake. A hot meal can be more comforting, especially in winter. When you compare quotes, check what each one includes: hours, menu, travel, minimum charge and VAT. Our quotes spell it all out.

Why us?

  • Mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy on the side
  • Quick service from the hatch
  • We cover The City and the whole of Buckinghamshire
  • No kitchen needed

Read how we price and our guide to van hire costs.

The process

Service is quick: food goes from the fryer to the hatch. When service is finished, we pack up and leave the pitch tidy. Sunset in The City is about 7:05pm in late September and about 3:55pm in December; ensure older guests have a well-lit route to the van.

  1. It starts with the date, where the wake is and roughly how many.
  2. You get an access check and a quote, without fuss.
  3. We agree a time to arrive and when food should be ready, allowing for the service running over.
  4. On the day we set up quietly and serve when guests are ready.
  5. When everyone has eaten, we clear up and go.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us when you want to eat
  • Plan a bit of cover near the hatch if rain is likely
  • Give us a contact for the day

Prices and what affects them

The price comes down to a few factors:

  • Whether a minimum applies
  • Access and parking
  • The length of service
  • How many people are eating

Distance and any road charges make a difference, so tell us exactly where your wake is.

Getting an accurate quote

A few details help us give you an accurate quote. Here’s what’s useful:

  • Allergies and diets you know about
  • Anything awkward about the way in
  • Expected numbers
  • The venue or postcode

The quickest way to a quote is to use our quote form. Tell us about your wake in The City, and we will come back with availability and a quote.

Should I sort the food myself?

Ordering from a local shop? Call ahead and collect at the last minute. For a crowd, a van is normally simpler.

For a small group, making your own food can work. For bigger numbers, a van makes life easier, and nobody has to miss the wake.

Arranging a wake in The City

The City is about 5 miles north-west of High Wycombe, in Buckinghamshire. From the centre of The City to the outskirts, we offer the same service: fresh frying, hot food from the hatch and a clear price. We cover 263 places across Buckinghamshire. Our bookings stretch from The City to Reading (15 miles away).

For a service at a church like Church of St Paul, choosing a wake venue nearby helps older guests. For family travelling by train, Saunderton station is about 1.8 miles away. The City is within about 2 miles of the Chilterns National Landscape, and rural venues there may have narrow lanes, so tell us about access.

This part of Buckinghamshire takes in HP14. That could mean a wake at a home on Bottle Square Lane, Radnage Common Road and Green Lane or the roads around them, as long as there’s somewhere for the van. Close by, we cover wakes in Waterend (1 mile west), Beacon's Bottom (1 mile south-west), Radnage (1 mile north), Bennett End (1 mile north-west) and Green End (1 mile south-east). Within a short drive, we also cover Aylesbury (11 miles north), High Wycombe (5 miles south-east), Chesham (11 miles east), Marlow (7 miles south-east), Amersham (11 miles east) and Beaconsfield (10 miles east).

Well-known places in the area include West Wycombe Rural (1.6 miles south-east) and Wycombe Hospital (5 miles south-east). The countryside around The City includes Yoesden and Bald Hill.

  • Pubs nearby include The Crown pub (0.5 miles north-west)

What the van needs

Most drives, car parks, yards and firm lawns can take the van, but a few things matter:

  • A spot near your guests
  • A level, firm spot the van can drive onto
  • A lit spot if service runs after dark

If you’re unsure, send a photo of the space and the way in, and we will say what we think before booking.

Questions from The City

Do you come to venues in the Chilterns National Landscape?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules for vehicles; ask your venue. We’ll work to whatever the site needs.

Do you come out to small places like The City?

Not at all. We serve villages and hamlets as well as towns. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.

How do we estimate numbers?

It is hard to know, so a rough number is fine. Your funeral director can help.

How long does set-up take?

We arrive well before service to park and heat the fryers. Timings are agreed in advance so food is ready when you want it.

Do you bring everything you need?

All the cooking happens in the van. Let us know what’s available at the site.

Do you have a kids’ option?

Children are very welcome. Let us know numbers, and we will include them in the plan.

Does the batter contain gluten?

No, not as standard: batter is usually made with wheat flour. Tell us about any coeliac guests and we’ll explain the options before booking.

Do you come to The City?

Yes. We take the van across London and the South East, including The City. To check your date, use our quote form.
