Fresh fish and chips in Bloomsbury

How our party fish and chip van works in Bloomsbury

It’s a treat that feels special without being formal: paper portions of fish and chips in the garden. For family celebrations after a christening and anniversary celebrations, we’ll put together a menu of curry sauce, cod and chips and pie and chips for your guests.

Most parties in Bloomsbury are at home, and in London that normally means a drive or street parking. A drive is ideal; otherwise, check what’s allowed on the street. Send us a photo. Food is served straight from the hatch, so every portion is hot, and the queue keeps moving.

Bloomsbury parties: what to know

Bloomsbury is about 1 mile north-east of City of Westminster, in Greater London. From the centre of Bloomsbury to the outskirts, the service works the same way: fish and chips fried to order, served hot and quoted clearly. We serve all 764 towns and villages in Greater London, from the larger towns to small villages.

If your drive is too small, local halls and clubs near Bloomsbury can be an alternative, as long as the van can park outside. A green space like Lincoln's Inn Fields is tempting, but a catering van there needs the landowner’s say-so, usually the council’s.

Wherever your party is in NW1W, W1T and NW1, we can bring the van to you. From Drury Lane, Euston Road and Duke's Road or a nearby road, we will bring the van to you. Bloomsbury is on the A401 and A501, which makes the journey straightforward. Nearby, we also serve parties in St Pancras (1 mile north-east), Euston (1 mile north-west), Kings Cross (1 mile north), Holborn (1 mile east) and Fitzrovia (1 mile west). We also serve nearby towns such as Kensington (4 miles south-west), Walthamstow (6 miles north-east), Hampstead (3 miles north-west), Ruislip (13 miles west), Brompton (3 miles south-west) and Stockwell (4 miles south).

Nearby you’ll also find Pilsudski Institute of London (under half a mile north-west) and Montfichet's Tower (1.2 miles south-east). Green spaces nearby include Barnsbury Wood and Ludgate Hill.

  • Schools near Bloomsbury include St George the Martyr Church of England Primary School (under half a mile east) and Maria Fidelis Catholic School FCJ (0.6 miles north-west)
  • Pubs nearby include Queens Larder Public House (within half a mile south-east)
  • Local facilities include Metropolitan Borough of Holborn (less than half a mile south)

Food your guests will love

Haddock and chips

Some people swear by haddock: a firmer flake and a sweeter taste. Ask us about offering haddock alongside or instead of cod.

Sausage and chips

Sausage and chips is the go-to for anyone who is not a fish fan, especially with curry sauce.

Planners, venues and businesses

Venues often have their own rules about outside caterers and vehicles: where a van can park, access times and the paperwork they want. Send us your venue’s requirements and we will confirm what we can provide.

If you are planning an event on someone’s behalf, whether you are a planner, a facilities manager or an organiser, we are happy to deal with you and the venue directly. It saves passing messages back and forth.

Common questions in Bloomsbury

Can the van park in Lincoln's Inn Fields?

Only if the landowner, usually the council, allows it. Check with them first.

Is parking a problem for the van in Bloomsbury?

It can be, so tell us about driveways, yards, car parks or a council suspension. We’ll work around it.

Who clears up?

We pack up and leave the pitch tidy when service is finished. Let us know about bins for guests.

Can the van park on the street?

That depends on local parking rules. A drive, car park or yard is typically easier; for the street, check the council’s rules.

What do children eat?

Of course. Sausage and chips is a favourite with children. Include them in your numbers.

How fast is service?

It depends on numbers, the menu and how people arrive. Give us your numbers and service window, and we will plan service around it.

Do you need power or water from us?

A suitable spot for the van, mainly. Mention power and water and we’ll confirm the rest.

Can you park at our house?

Often, yes, with a level drive and a clear way in. Send a photo of the drive and the way in.

Allergies and dietary needs

Dietary needs are easiest to plan with some notice. Our advice:

  • Have a back-up for special diets
  • Flag any coeliac guests
  • Send allergies to us in writing
  • Send us a picture of the drive

For a children’s party, serve food about an hour in.

Finish with the birthday cake.

What a fish and chip van costs

There is nothing hidden: the quote reflects:

  • How far we travel
  • Peak dates such as summer Saturdays
  • Any minimum charge
  • Parking and the way in

The price depends on numbers, the menu and how long we serve, plus travel and access. Every booking gets its own quote.

Details that help

You don’t need everything decided to ask for a quote, but it helps to know:

  • How to get in: gates, lanes and ground
  • A picture of where the van would go
  • Dietary needs, with numbers
  • The date and when you’d like to eat

The quickest way to a quote is to fill in our quote form. Tell us about your party in Bloomsbury, and we will check the date and send a price.

Before you choose a spot

No two venues are the same, so we’ll ask about yours before we confirm. Generally, we look for:

  • A clear area by the serving hatch
  • Light near the van and the queue for evening service
  • A spot near your guests

As a London location, Bloomsbury is inside the Ultra Low Emission Zone, and parking takes planning: tell us about driveways, yards, car parks or a council parking suspension.

Not sure about the spot? Send us a photo and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.

A fish and chip van or other catering?

Ordering in for a crowd means long waits. A van fries on the spot. Got a budget? Let us know, and we’ll suggest how to make it work. Keeping the menu short is normally the best value.

Why Bloomsbury hosts choose us

  • A quote that spells everything out
  • The queue at the hatch gets people talking
  • The classic sides: peas, curry sauce and gravy
  • Cod, haddock, sausages and pies

Take a look at our prices page and the cost guide.

How the day works

Setting up takes a little while, because the oil has to come up to temperature, so we’re there in good time before you want to eat. At midsummer, it’s light in Bloomsbury until about 9:20pm, which gives a garden party a long evening. By late September sunset is around 7:05pm, so plan festoon lights for later parties.

  1. Send us your date, numbers and address.
  2. We check the route in and send a price.
  3. We arrive early to park and heat the fryers.
  4. Fish goes into the batter and straight into the fryer, to order.
  5. Service is straight from the hatch, then we pack up.

How to prepare

  • Plan a bit of cover near the hatch if rain is likely
  • Tell us when you want to eat
  • Have a level parking spot ready

How to get a price

We only need a few details to quote: the date, where the van would park, roughly how many people and when you’d like to eat. To send them, fill in our quote form.

DIY versus a fish and chip van

Doing the food yourself saves money, but the host ends up running around. Booking the van means hot food and no stress.

Ordering in from a local chip shop is an option. Large orders are slow, and the food cools in the bags. A van cooks in front of your guests instead.

  • Fried fresh to order in the van at your event
  • Cod, haddock and chips, sausages and pies
  • The van comes to you: homes, venues, workplaces and fields
  • Served at the time you choose, from the hatch
