How our wedding fish and chip van works in The Stocks

We park close to the reception, and guests wander out to the hatch. It becomes a lovely moment in the evening. We are frequently asked to cater evening wedding food and marquee and garden weddings, with curry sauce, mushy peas and cod and chips.

Rural weddings around The Stocks have a magic of their own, and evening fish and chips adds to it. Plan a firm back-up spot if the field is wet. We cook inside the van, right where your guests are, and the food reaches them hot and crisp.

The process

Your timings come first. If the day runs behind, we simply start frying a little later, so nothing is cooked before it is needed. Golden-hour photos in The Stocks at midsummer come around 9:15pm, so the van can serve before or after your sunset photos. In late May, sunset is about 8:45pm, and in late September about 7:00pm.

  1. First, tell us about your wedding.
  2. We check the date and where the van will park, then send a quote.
  3. Timings and the van’s spot are agreed in advance.
  4. We cook to order on the day for your guests.
  5. We serve from the hatch, then leave the pitch tidy.

How to prepare

  • Think about a gazebo by the van in case of rain
  • Share the timings for the day
  • Plan where the queue will stand

What the van needs

We will agree the van’s spot with you before the day. A good spot ticks these boxes:

  • A spot near your guests
  • A clear way in, with no low branches, cables or narrow gates
  • Light near the van and the queue for evening service

If you are unsure, send a picture of the space and the way in, and we will say what we think.

Our booking checklist

Takeaway run or book a van?

Frying for a crowd at home is not a good idea: hot oil and a busy party are a bad combination. Leave the frying to a van built for it.

Some hosts try a takeaway order. Large orders are slow, and the food cools in the bags. A van solves that by cooking on site.

Common questions in The Stocks

We are gathering after a service at Parish Church of St John the Baptist: can you come?

Yes, at a nearby hall, home or venue with somewhere for the van. Food is generally served at the reception venue rather than the church. Send us the address.

What about events near the coast?

Yes. Wind does not affect the fryers, but plan a sheltered spot for the queue.

Does the batter contain gluten?

Not as standard: the batter contains wheat. Tell us about any coeliac guests and we will explain the options before you book.

What time is best for the van?

Whenever suits your day. Most couples go for just after the first dance.

Will guests take photos at the van?

Many couples love having it in the photos. If not, ask your venue to park it out of the main photo spots.

How many evening guests should we cater for?

Not every guest eats in the evening. We’ll talk it through when we quote.

Can the van park on grass?

That depends on the weather and the ground. Tell us about it when you enquire, and we’ll advise.

Who clears up?

The pitch is left as we found it. It helps to have bins near the hatch.

What comes out of the fryer

Gravy

Chips and gravy is a favourite in the north and the Midlands, and it goes perfectly with a pie.

Pie and chips

Pie and chips gives people a filling alternative to fish, perfect with gravy.

Prices and what affects them

The price comes down to a few factors:

  • Any minimum charge
  • The date and time of year
  • How easy the site is to reach
  • Travel, tolls and road charges

There’s no one-size-fits-all price for a fish and chip van. A short service and a long afternoon’s trading are very different bookings. We set everything out in your quote.

Getting an accurate quote

These details help us quote quickly:

  • The venue or postcode
  • Dietary needs, with numbers
  • The spot you have in mind for the van
  • How to get in: gates, lanes and ground

We quote for each event separately, so the price fits what you actually need. To ask for one, send us your details through our quote form.

Why choose a fish and chip van in The Stocks?

Late-night snacks from the venue can be small. Fish and chips fills people up. Many fish and chip vans set a minimum, because the van, fuel and travel cost the same for a small group. Ask us what applies to your wedding.

What you get with us

  • Hot food handed straight over
  • The classic sides: peas, curry sauce and gravy
  • Something for guests to gather round
  • No surprises in your quote
