Planning an event in Burlington Estate?

DIY versus a fish and chip van

Ordering from a local shop? Call ahead and collect at the last minute. For a crowd, a van is normally simpler.

Doing the food yourself saves money, but the host ends up running around. Booking the van means hot food and no stress.

Film set catering in Burlington Estate, fried fresh

A chip van is a popular crew treat on a long shoot, alongside regular catering. For location filming and lunch at the unit base, we’ll put together a menu of haddock and chips, sausage and chips and mushy peas for your guests.

Shoots in Burlington Estate often use streets, yards and car parks as unit bases. The location manager will arrange the van’s spot, often with council permission. Everything is fried fresh at your shoot, not cooked earlier and kept warm.

Is a fish and chip van right for your shoot?

Wrap parties add up. A van keeps it relaxed and simple. If you have a budget in mind, tell us, and we will suggest a menu and timing to match. Keeping the menu short is generally the best value.

How to compare vans

Planners, venues and businesses

If your event is in a public place, such as a park or a street, check what permission you need first. Ask the council or landowner early.

Venues frequently have their own rules about outside caterers and vehicles: where a van can park, access times and the paperwork they want. Send us your venue’s requirements and we will confirm what we can provide.

How we price a fish and chip van for the crew

Two events with the same numbers can cost different amounts, because of:

  • Distance and any road charges
  • The day of the week
  • Parking and the way in
  • Any minimum charge

Most vans have a minimum charge, since getting the van there costs the same however many eat. We’ll tell you up front.

Getting an accurate quote

You don’t need every detail fixed to get a quote, but it helps to know:

  • A picture of the parking spot
  • Where the event is
  • Rough numbers for adults and children
  • Anything awkward about the way in

To get a price, use our quote form. Give us the details of your shoot, and we will check the date and send a price.

Burlington Estate: your questions answered

Is parking a problem for the van in Burlington Estate?

London parking needs planning: let us know about off-street space or permits. We’ll work around it.

Can the van park in St Anne's Churchyard?

Only if the landowner, typically the council, allows it. Ask them first.

Can the van come to Burlington Estate?

We do. We serve events in Burlington Estate and across Greater London. Tell us your date and we’ll check availability.

Do you fry it on site?

It is. The fryers are in the van, so it is fried on the spot, not cooked earlier and kept warm.

Can the van come to base?

Yes, on level ground at base; we will check the route.

Do you do anything other than fish?

We serve sausages and pies as well as fish. Tell us about other diets and we will tell you what we can offer.

Is grass a problem?

Generally, if it is firm and dry. Soft, wet ground can trap any vehicle, so plan a back-up spot.

What if the weather’s bad?

Rain does not stop the fryers: the cooking is inside the van. Crew will appreciate cover near the hatch.

How the day works

We get there well before service, set up and bring the oil up to temperature. Crew generally gather round the hatch once service starts. Light in Burlington Estate lasts until about 9:20pm at midsummer; for early or late service, base needs lighting.

  1. The production office sends us the location, dates, numbers and lunch time.
  2. We check access and send a quote.
  3. We agree the van’s position and arrival with the location manager.
  4. We set up at the unit base and fry to order for the lunch break.
  5. Afterwards we pack up and leave the unit base clean.

Before we arrive

  • Confirm the van is allowed on site
  • Give us a contact for the day
  • Send us final numbers and any allergies in good time

How to get a price

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote: where the van would park, how to get in, numbers and timings. Photos of the spot and the way in help. To send your details, send us your details through our quote form.

Planning the van’s spot

The right spot keeps everyone safe and the service smooth. We need:

  • The location’s agreement
  • A level, firm spot at the unit base
  • Room for the crew to queue

As a London location, Burlington Estate is inside the Ultra Low Emission Zone, and parking takes planning: tell us about driveways, yards, car parks or a council parking suspension.

If you’re unsure, send a photo of the space and the way in, and we’ll say what we think before booking.
