A chip van near Eastfields

Film set catering in Eastfields, fried fresh

Everything is cooked as crew come up, so it’s hot when the break is called. Whether it’s end-of-shoot parties and seaside shoots, we’ll put together a menu of sausage and chips, cod and chips and pie and chips.

Shoots in Eastfields often use streets, yards and car parks as unit bases. Locations will have the parking arrangements, often with council permission. Let us know about allergies and dietary needs in advance, and we will be straight with you about what we can do.

Planning the van’s spot

Every site is different, so we ask about the spot and the way in before we confirm. In general, we need:

  • A route in the van can manage, with no low branches or tight lanes
  • A lit spot for dark mornings or evenings
  • The location’s agreement

Eastfields is in London, within the Ultra Low Emission Zone, and parking can be tight: let us know about off-street space or permits.

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we will advise.

On the menu in Eastfields

For event organisers in Eastfields

If you are booking for a business, tell us how you’d like to handle the booking and payment, and we will talk you through the process. We’re happy to liaise with facilities on parking and timings.

Planning an event for a club, school or charity in Eastfields? A fish and chip van draws people in and almost everyone likes it. Give us the details and we will suggest how it could work.

Can’t we just order from the chip shop?

Ordering from a local shop? Call ahead and collect at the last minute. For anything more than a handful of people, a van is normally the easier option.

A DIY buffet works for small groups. For bigger numbers, a van makes life easier, and you get to enjoy the day.

How the day works

Changes on the day are fine: we can start a little later or slow the pace to suit your shoot. Daylight is short on winter shoots near Eastfields: sunset is about 3:55pm, so lunch at base is frequently in daylight but a wrap meal is not.

  1. We start with the location, call times and crew numbers.
  2. You get an access check and a quote.
  3. We arrange the van’s spot at the unit base with locations.
  4. We cook to order through the crew’s lunch break.
  5. We clear up and get out of the way.

Preparing for the day

  • Pick a flat, firm place for the van to park
  • Think about a gazebo by the van in case of rain
  • Make sure the van can get in

How we price a fish and chip van for the crew

Every booking is priced individually, based on a few main things:

  • Any minimum charge
  • The day of the week
  • The number of meals
  • The length of service

If you have a budget in mind, tell us, and we’ll suggest a menu and timing to match. Keeping the menu short is generally the best value.

Questions from Eastfields

Could you trade in Figge's Marsh?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, generally the council. Check with them first.

Which station is closest to Eastfields?

Eastfields has its own station: Mitcham Eastfields station.

Can the van park on grass?

It depends on the ground. Tell us about it when you enquire, and send a photo if you can.

Can coeliacs eat the battered fish?

Our battered fish contains gluten, because standard batter uses wheat flour. Tell us about coeliac crew when you enquire, and we will be straight with you about what’s possible.

Is everything cooked fresh?

Yes, always. Everything is fried fresh in the van, then handed over hot from the hatch.

What about crew who do not eat fish?

Yes: sausage and chips or pie and chips. Tell us roughly how many to expect.

How long are you on site?

We arrive well before service to park and heat the fryers. We will agree arrival and serving times with you.

Can you work to the call sheet?

We expect changes. A contact on the day is all we need.

Allergies and dietary needs

A little planning helps everyone eat safely. A few tips:

  • Update numbers if they change
  • Flag any coeliac crew
  • Send the unit base address and directions
  • Plan bins and waste at base

Tell us if supporting artists are eating.

Pre-orders from the crew help on tight breaks.

Gravy

Gravy brings a bit of warmth to the meal.

Pie and chips

Pie and chips is hearty and filling, and it’s a favourite in colder months.

Why fried-to-order beats a buffet

For a crew lunch people will remember, a chip van is hard to beat. Travel, tolls and charges such as ULEZ can affect the price, so tell us exactly where your shoot is.
