How our party fish and chip van works in Chalk
A chip van also works for street parties, with the right permissions in place. We serve gravy, pie and chips and sausage and chips, and we are regularly asked to cater family reunions and neighbourhood get-togethers.
Country parties near Chalk suit a chip van: cooked to order and eaten on the lawn. Have a firm back-up spot for wet weather. We bring the van and everything we need to cook, and we leave the pitch tidy when we go.

What else we do in Chalk
Can’t we just order from the chip shop?
For a small group, making your own food can work. For larger numbers, or when you want hot food, a van takes the pressure off, and nobody has to miss the party.
DIY food keeps costs down, but the host spends the event serving. Booking the van means hot food and no stress.

- Lighting nearby for evening events
- A spot near your guests
If you’re unsure, send a picture of the space and the way in, and we will say what we think.

A closer look at the menu
Curry sauce
The chip shop’s own curry sauce is mild and a little sweet, great with chips and sausages.
Mushy peas
Mushy peas are made from dried marrowfat peas, soaked and cooked until soft. They’re the side most people expect.
What a fish and chip van costs
Fish and chip van pricing is simple once we know the basics:
- Travel, tolls and road charges
- The date and time of year
- Whether a minimum applies
- Cod, haddock or both
Most vans have a minimum charge, since getting the van there costs the same however many eat. We’ll tell you up front.
Details that help
The more we know about your party, the better we can plan. Please include:
- Any dietary needs and allergies
- Roughly how many people, including children
- The date and time of the event
- A photo of the parking spot
We quote for each event separately, so the price fits what you actually need. To ask for one, fill in our quote form.
Diets, allergies and planning
We need to know about dietary needs and allergies in advance, and we’ll be straight with you about what’s possible. To make it work smoothly:
- Ensure the van can park legally
- Ask about dietary needs on the invitation
- Tell us how many children are coming
- A picture of the parking spot helps
Put bins and napkins near the hatch.
Finish with the birthday cake.
Chalk questions
Is Chalk too small for a chip van?
Not at all. We serve villages and hamlets as well as towns. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.
Can the van park in Shorne Woods Country Park?
Only with permission from the park’s owner, generally the council. Ask them first.
Does the batter contain gluten?
Standard batter is made with wheat flour, so battered fish contains gluten. Let us know about coeliac guests in advance, and we’ll tell you honestly what we can offer.
Can you park on the road outside?
Only in a legal space, or with the council’s permission. Ask your council early.
How long are you on site?
That depends on your numbers and timings. We agree arrival, serving and finishing times with you before the day.
Can the van park on my drive?
Typically, if the drive is level and firm and the van can get in. Send a photo of the drive and the way in.
Is there a non-fish option?
Yes: sausages and pies, with chips. Tell us roughly how many to expect.
Is there something for children?
Children are very welcome. Let us know numbers, and we will include them in the plan.
The process
On the day, we position the van, set up the hatch and get the fryers up to temperature. Once we are hot, we cook to order, timed around your party. For a late-May party in Chalk, sunset is around 8:50pm; at midsummer it is about 9:20pm. After dark, light the area around the van.
- It starts with your date, address and numbers.
- We check where the van can park and send a price.
- On the day, we park up and get the fryers going.
- We fry fresh and serve from the hatch as your guests come up.
- Afterwards, we clear up and leave you to it.
Before we arrive
- Plan where the queue will stand
- Give us your final numbers and allergies
- Give us a contact for the day
